Dune (Dune #1) in The Complete Idiots Guide to the Ultimate Reading List

I really wanted to like this book and read it to be prepared for the new movie that comes out on the 29th of February (here in Germany), however I think I had the wrong expectations for a book that was the basis for an already slow-motion-paced first part of the movie.

Here are some thoughts throughout my reading journey:
-Somebody needs to stop princes Irulan from putting fcking spoilers before each and every chapter wtf
-strong and interesting start, atm (20-30%) it's be Incredibly underwhelming. I really wanted to like this book and read it to be prepared for the new movie that comes out on the 29th of February (here in Germany), however I think I had the wrong expectations for a book that was the basis for an already slow-motion-paced first part of the movie.

Here are some thoughts throughout my reading journey:

-strong and interesting start, atm (20-30%) it's becoming more and more political, with just ppl talking to each other, biting on their tongues to not mess up any alliances. Meh
- kinda funny how suddenly everyone shits their pants (including his mom), as soon as they realize their little boy is becoming a young adult with responsibility
- Plot starts getting chewy and dull. Every man talking to another man about politics in this book is just one politics-dialogue too much.
-The most unsettling thing about this book is the „preferences“ of Baron Harkonnen and how violently he sticks to them, wtf.
- would be nice to have an indicator about how much time had passed before a new section of the book started. Paul used to be 15 and now he has a kid? Ok, that escalated quickly.
- Paul has plot armor 5000. He can do EVERYTHING and everyone will shit their pants, only from hearing his name (think Harry Potter, but with him making no mistakes ever). That makes it predictable that everything will be just fine about him. Even if you skip Princess Irulan‘s spoilers
- the year is 11.000 something and still the society‘s rules seem ancient af. WHY?
- The author skipped THE MOST INTERESTING PART I THOUGHT THE ENTIRE BOOK WAS BUILDING UP TOWARDS and all I get is two topless boys fighting with knives, with a whole bunch of people in robes watching in silence. Beyond awkward.
- I wanted to like Paul's character for 80% of the book or so, but the more I progressed with it, the less likeable he became, in the end he was just this blob of wisdom, talking in such a cold manner, no fire, no passion, only calculations of power. What happened to the little rebel I was rooting for in the beginning?
