I checked this book out from the library on a whim. I seem to be stuck in a vampire/werewolf fix at the moment so I figured I'd give this one a try as it came up in a category search.

I was pleasantly surprised by the book. Whenever I started feeling as though I didn't know enough about the history of this reality, the author managed to fill in the holes. I never felt like I was overly confused from missing background information nor that there was too much information.

Excellent! I loved it!

Rachel, without wanting to be, is one hell of a heroine, even if it's just her trying to keep herself from being killed. When she sets her sights on something, she doesn't back down; like a pitt bull that chomps down and won't let go. Tenacious and unrelenting, she does whatever she needs to do. I loved her attitude and personality, and I like the way she thinks.

A slow beginning that rocked all the way to the end! I love reading about witches, pixies, fae and other creatures that go bump into the night. How about having two agencies taking care of these creatures when they go bad?

"Apprehending unlicensed and black-art witches was my usual line of work, as it takes a witch to catch a witch. But the street were quieter than usual this week. It was jus the luck of the Turn that had put me here in the dark and rain. 'Who am I kidding?' I whispered, pulling the strap of my bag farther up my shoulder. I hadn't been sent to tag a witch in a month.: unlicensed, white, dark, or otherwise. Bringing the mayor's son in for Wereing outside of a full moon probably hadn't been the best idea."

Rachel is having work troubles, bad luck she thinks but there is a power behind all her mishaps but she won't find that out yet... Bagging a leprechaun that is evading taxes is her gem for the evening and Jenks the pixy is the only one brave enough to tag with her as she lost a fairy to a frog a few weeks back. Rachel works for Inderland Security and her current corner and outfit has her pegged as a working girl, much to her discomfort. Once in the bar, a few drinks from gentlemen and a chat from another co-worker and vampire... Rachel and Jenks spot their mark. She is bigger than most leprechauns but that is because she has charmed herself and yet she still needs a stool to reach the bar. A slip of the wrist spills a drink which leads Rachel to tagging her mark on the spot and did I giggle...

"Left hand dropping, I snatched the cloth, tangling her in it. My right swung back, then forward with my cuffs, clicking them about her wrists. In an instant it was done. She blinked, shocked. Damn, I'm good. The woman's eyes widened as she realized what had happened. 'Blazes and condemnation!' she cried, sounding elegant with her Irish accent. Hers wasn't faked. 'What the 'ell do you think you're doin'? 'Inderland Security.' I said, slapping my I.S. identification down. The rush was gone already. 'You stand accused of fabricating a rainbow for the purpose of misrepresenting the income generated from said rainbow, failure to file the appropriate requisition forms for said rainbow, failure to notify Rainbow Authority of said rainbow's end... 'It's a lie!' the woman shouted, contorting in the cuffs. Her eyes darted wildly about the bar as all attention focused on her. 'All a lie!I found that pot legally.'

snort, giggle, heehee....

Here is my next favorite part of this story...

"'You canna catch me! ...'Rings of steel alone canna hold me. I've escaped from kings, and sultans, and nasty little children with nets!' ...'Aw, for the love of St. Pete.' she slumped, sending her eyes over the yellow moon, green clover, pink heart, and orange star that decorated my cuffs. 'May the devil's own dog hump your leg. Who squealed about the charms?' 'You caught me with four? Four? I didn't think the old ones still worked.'"

The reference to the cereal sent me over the edge and I was only in chapter one. So Rachel quits the agency to work with Ivy the vampire, the one in the bar. They become a team, but now Rachel is cursed for real and someone is paying to see her exterminated. Jenks join the team and soon the race is one to catch a drug dealer with a little help from her friends and the FIB, Federal Inderland Bureau.

"It was only a matter of time before humanity insisted on a purely human institution to monitor Inderlander activities. The Federal Inderland Bureau arose, dissolving and replacing local law enforcement throughout the U.S. the out-of-work Inderland police and federal agents formed their own police force, the I.S. Rivalry between the two remains high even today, serving to keep a tight lid on the more aggressive Inderlanders."

FIB is dedicated to finding the remaining illegal biolabs (something happened with tomatoes--you will have to read about it in the book) something about clean insulin and staving off leukemia. The FIB wants to find banned technology as the I.S. wants to get the mind altering drug Brimstone off the streets. There was so much information, but I needed it as the book progressed and the story grew. I'm looking forward to the second book in the series... ...more

Though I am only reviewing this book, I've read all of the Rachel Morgan series... Well all except the last one, which I read a chapter at a time, then put it away because I am savoring it.
Her writing is tight, fast-paced and fun. There is as much humor as there is tension in her books.
Rachel is a wonderful character who has some confidence, but is always surprised at how she gets tangled in the madness around her. There is something endlessly sympathetic and admirable about her whimsy spiced w ...more

Dang..another UF series to read. Really great characters and lots of action and suspense. Rachel is a great heroine and Ivy and Jenks are perfect sidekicks. Love LOVE LOVE Jenks! Fun read and looking forward to reading more in the series.
