The writing - Fabulous!
The dichotomy of the characters - Charming!
The plot - Fairly average, actually. But, with a sparkling, glittering romance to set it apart from everything else.

I can't right now, but I promise to come back when I have more than 'that was proper special'.
Right. Let's see.
Ash is class, and sophistication, and a self-absorbed dick, so damaged by privilege and a mental illness that de-constructs every assumption he ever had about himself that, ultimately, he is only able to retain his dignity by sacrificing someone else's. But not so damaged that he doesn't realise the omnishambles he's made of his one-in-a-lifetime chance at happiness, and surprisingly pe ...more

ARRGH. I had an entire review at the ready, painstakingly written, and then my bloody macbook had the gall to shut down on me. Because not enough battery left. *sighs dramatically*
So here the short version, because I'm angry. (With my macbook, obvsly.)
3.5-ish stars.
Although beautifully written and leaving me with the feeling that I really have to read other works by AJH, like right now, I wasn't completely sold on this book.

I wasn't expecting to like this book. But I did! I LOVED it ...
This was one of the best books of the year for me. It is unexpectedly good and brilliantly written. I loved pretty much everything about it -- strong characterization, powerful and emotionally engaging, funny ... the pacing is perfect and didn't drag. I literally fell in love with Ash ("babes") and Darian ("the glitter pirate") in this unique and endearing little romp. I didn't want it to end ... ever ... it was so good!

I was ready to put this book on my favourites shelf at 40%. The first half is a 6-star read for me. I had a nerdgasm at the Waiting for Godot reference, freaked my cat out with all the laughter and felt people staring at me on the tram because I was trying hard not to dissolve into fits of giggles. I really need to stop reading funny books on the tram (although this book was both funny and sad). I'm rambling.
The second half was a 4-star read perhaps because I realised then that the author had m ...more

This was a great book in the series. I don't know why I waited so long but I am so glad I got to read this one. It will be a reread!
