Alexis Hall has enormous potential. He is not afraid of difficult MCs, with serious issues. Ash, the narrator of this 1st person POV story has type 1 bipolar disorder. He has panic attacks and periods of depression that he shares with the reader. In his past he has been hospitalized during manic episodes and there has been at least one suicide attempt. He is sometimes genuinely debilitated by his mental issues and sometimes he uses them as an excuse or as a means to manipulate his friends. Ash i

I bought this book when it was published and then held on to it like one holds on to the last brownie in a pan because the reviews were so positive that I wanted to make sure I read it when I had the time to savor it. This was not a mistake on my part; I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I cried twice! That scene when Darian shows up at Ash's house after the fashion show... *sobs* But also the story is lyrically written and plays around with the time frame in a way that feels apt for this character (

"There was little I feared more than happiness, that faithless whore who waited always between madness and emptiness."
I did not like the characters in this book--they never clicked. Ash was a total selfish asshole and I'm not sure what Darian was-I know Ash was sick but he came across as a dick---the writing was good--I just didn't care for the story or the characters ...more

This book was selected for me for the MM Romance Group's Pick It For Me September Challenge, and I picked it as one of my Sept. Scavenger Hunt books. I was excited about reading this book because the blurb sounded so good. However, despite the good rating I gave this book, I had several problems with it.

I wanted to give up several times. It was... tiring. There was way too much porking (I wish the author had introduced more "out of bed" scenes. A cooking scene, and the Fashion Week/Day and wedding dinner scenes were not enough. I just couldn't buy into the relationship development). I found Ash to be a detestable person, and his inner monologue bored me to death. I loved Darian though. Hall is undoubtedly a talented author, his prose beautiful if overdone.
