Despite hearing the name of this book for years, knowing it has won awards, having friends who actively recommended it to me, I had never picked up this book until now. And Hello Dolly!, am I impressed.
The first 100 pages are rough. We don't get the benefit of following a country bumpkin on her first wide-eyed adventure into the world so we can learn things at the same time she does. I really couldn't decide how to rate this. I'm going with 3.5 stars. I read it in about 3 days. Considering how complicated it should have been, the author did a remarkable job of making the protagonist understandable and sympathetic. Considering that "she" is essentially just a fragment (one of what used to be many) of a space ship AI running around in a human body.
