I can't rate among others because it has two distinct interpretations. On the face of it, I'd give the book a 1 or 2/5, because it's a painfully angsty self-sabotaging teenage self-insert novel OR a 5/5 on my alternate minority reading:

Among Others is the a tragic story of a brain-damaged and as a result, delusional girl told through the eyes of the girl herself. Her injury, from a car crash that killed her sister, has made her believe that all the things she believed in as a small child, fairi

This is, without a doubt, my favorite book of all time. Considering that I've read several hundred books a year since I was 8, that's saying a lot.

When I finished this book for the first time, I actually turned it over and started again.

THAT GOOD.

"I can bear anything so long as there are books." Brilliant.

Edit: I've now read this five times. I'll never delete it off my Nook. This book is one of my best friends and it goes with me everywhere.

Edit edit: six times. Got a signed copy that I'll trea

Actual Rating 4.5

This book is literary fiction masquerading as fantasy for people who grew up reading science fiction and fantasy. It was beautiful and sad and heart-warming and not for everybody. I can't imagine this book speaking to anybody who doesn't connect with the worlds of SF&F at least not the way it spoke to me.

I loved how the magic was portrayed here, flowing, soft, complex, invisible, corruptible and completely interconnected with everything (Star Wars anyone?). I loved how much of a

The end was a little unsatisfying. Deus ex machina.

It can be tedious how the narrator often rambles on and on about books (most of which I haven't read; I expect I would like the SF but I really can't stand classic fantasy.) But I'm inclined to be indulgent of Mori, because she is so much like the younger me.
