Such a good idea for a book. It takes all the best parts of Patrick O'Brian and Anne McCaffrey and mixes them together in one great action packed dragon soup. How could you go wrong with this. You're right. You can't. It is physically impossible
The language is the first thing I noticed and loved. It is seamless and easy to understand, but is undeniably old fashioned and perfect for the time period Ms. Novik chose. The gentlemanly airs everyone puts on, and the insults to honor if you but look at ...more

Another five-star series begun in as many weeks; I can't believe my luck! So. Incredibly. Endearing. I know it seems strange to say about a book about the Napoleonic wars and dragons, but I just wanted to pinch everyone in this book repeatedly; they were SO CUTE and funny. Maybe it's the Edwardian language; maybe it's the way the dragon-rider relationship seems to meld the best of a father-son connection and best friendship; maybe it's also that the characters are just so well done. I freaking loved this book. Temeraire and Laurence are so cozy characters, as are the other dragons and their riders. All are characters I learned to love, through boot camp and battles. It's a great story with a brilliant premise and I cannot wait till Peter Jackson finishes with those Hobbit-movies and gets to this, because it's going to take people's breath away.
A nice, cozy read, though it's written in prose that they would use in the 1800's, so it might be a bit hard to read, but it was eas ...more

Stolen from my original livejournal review of the novel:
I'm currently ankle-deep in Naomi Novik's Temeraire books, a crowd-pleasing bit of Napoleonic, dragon-riding fluff that reads like some sort of Dungeons & Dragons/Master & Commander mash-up fanfic, depicting a world in which a stern but tender-hearted man protects, in no particular order, his more special-than-special dragon, women's right to dragon-riding equality, and, I suppose, Britain. To more fully flesh out the imaginary world, the e ...more

Might have considered 5 stars, because this started out really strong, and I was really in to it. The dragons and their personalities were really fun. But something about how the climatic events wrapped up seemed to subtract (?) from the oomph of the characters & world.
There were a few events that happened, but none had a entirely satisfactory resolution - in hindsight, maybe it's the author's style of writing. Though each was distinct, the author spent a minimal amount of time to wrap it up be ...more
