Of Stephenson's work I've read and what I know of his others by reputation, Reamde is likely the most accessible and least ambitious, which is to say it's mainly just a lot of fun. It's partly what Snow Crash tried (and IMO failed) to be: an action-movie meditation on how virtuality and the consequent collapse of geographic distance can impact our lives. I hadn't realized how badly I wanted a smart thriller--a novel with spies and Russian mobsters and gunfights, but written at a higher level than airport bookstore pulp--so thanks for that, Neal! Despite the heft and the incredibly complex plot, I flew through it and greatly enjoyed the ride. I particularly enjoyed the asides with the two ridiculous fantasy writers. At long last, a Stephenson book whose ending is in some ways even better than the rest of the book! An extraordinarily engaging read from soup to nuts. I think at one point in the middle we're expected to follow at least six different narrative threads spread out across the globe...and at least one in a virtual world that makes Azeroth look small and Pong-like.
