It was a quick read. I wasn't expecting it to read like a young adult book, but it did.
Nothing quite gelled for me. Their whole adolescence was way over the top. I actually thought they were pretty cool, but we were told in no small terms they were in NO WAY COOL, AT ALL.
I'm not really sure what the point of the assassin was...?
The best line of the book was, "You celebrate the small victories, and dream of the big ones to come."
Pretty forgettable otherwise. It seems to have bugged a lot of peopl ...more

4.5 stars. I love Charlie Jane and was sooo ready for this book. A true sci-fi/fantasy novel all about the merging of those worlds and our own.

I really wanted to love this book, as I've been a huge fan of Charlie Jane's on io9, but there were a few places it could have been improved. Three and half stars, vs the full four. The story was excellent, and I actually did appreciate how non-specific the magic and tech was.
The language & descriptions were a little stilted, especially at the beginning; there were maybe one too many references to current geek culture (Some worked, some were awkward. We need to know why her cat is named Berkley ...more

Definitely more of a 3.5 than a 3 and definitely worth reading. Characters that seized sympathy. Lines that would strike you out of the blue and ring in your head for hours afterward. I felt like some of the transitions were a bit awkward and abrupt, especially the jump from adolescence to early adulthood, (like maybe don’t cut out alllll the ‘boring parts’ if some of them help smooth the path for the reader?) but on the whole, a solid and fascinating tale.

There were some weak spots in the plot and character development but I couldn't stop listening to the story and that shit is forgivable when you can world build as well as Anders can. A few characters felt like they could be completely excised from the book without impacting the story while a few others could have their own book (Roberta as a serial killer cum commune queen of the chickens.)
