This is one of the most popular books I have seen in a while, especially on Youtube with the Booktuber YA crowd other than Brandon Sanderson (as his last few books have also been bad). This might be because the author wrote a series of YA novels, before she started on writing adult books to add to the hype.
I should have known and expected this book to be bad, if the YA Booktuber crowed loved it and this book had hype, but I decided to read it anyway to see if the hype lived up, expecting anythin ...more

I loved the first bit and couldn’t put it down, but as the world was revealed, I lost interest. It was a slog to get to the end. There was a lot of telling instead of showing.
There was one reveal towards the end: (view spoiler) It was never hinted at before and it never came up again. I scoffed out loud at that scene. …Why do we care?
Personal pet peeve here: SO MANY parentheses. Ugh.
Don’t think I will continue this series. ...more

You see, Kell is one of the rare magicians who can walk between the worlds, from the magic-rich Red London, to the dangerous White London and even to boring old Grey London (on our magic-bereft Earth). So what does Kell do when he gets to a new world ...more

I was looking for a change of pace from my recent reads, and picked this up based on a recommendation from last year. I had never heard of Schwab, but was positively inspired by some pull quotes and the cover (rare but true).
Overall I liked the book; it covered a lot of territory that wasn't new, but the execution was enjoyable enough to overcome any deja vu. ...more

Compelling concept and well written, however, poor narration (I listened to this) marred my overall opinion. I felt the reader was particularly unsuited to Delilah and made the work seem overly juvenile, when in fact the content hovers between YA/Adult. I think I'll need to re-read in print before I move on to the sequel.
