Has some sophomore-year-creative- writing-class-type prose (the sky crawls arthritically, for instance) in spots, which might account for people comparing this book to the likes of Octavia Butler, but I vehemently disagree. It isn't badly written, but most of the writing is quite workmanlike. It tells the story. It gets the job done. But it doesn't really work out. Because it's choppy. Damn you, Hemingway.

Intelligent, through-provoking, and gripping. The Girl With All The Gifts is a post-apocalyptic novel that slowly teases the reader into the grim reality of its world.
From the cold open of its main character, a 10 year old girl who is restrained into a wheelchair before being wheeled into a classroom, MR Carey deftly lets the world take shape in snippets and morsels.

This book was creepy and eerily wonderful. Highly recommended!
