A SF classic or a superficial military SF?

For me it was more of the latter. Read on its own and not in the context of all the similar books that have proceeded it, this is a fun, military SF novel. The book is well written and entertaining.

The plot sees (view spoiler)

I'm not generally a fan of first-person stories, but this one was well-done, especially considering how much self-describing took place (what with being "young" again). There were a few places in the middle where I was wondering where the plot was going (there was no "question" or real conflict to draw me forward), but then once it hit stride, I was pulled along for the ride again. Some interesting science fiction concepts are put to the test here, and many emotional scenes take place in between ...more

Really liked it, reminded me a lot of the starship troopers movie. But it has it's own tone to it. ...more

I am planning to give this book another try since I liked Redshirts by this author.

Jan 04, 2016:
I found this book to be boring. I read about 11% of it and finally lost patience. Maybe I am reading this when I am not in the mood to read paragraphs about alien technology or the author cannot make these paragraphs interesting. Either way, I have been putting this book down way too many times so it is better to just mark it abandoned until I feel like reading it again.

Refreshing sci-fi from the first page to the last. I did enjoy it a lot.

This book is a straight-forward sci-fi adventure without taking to much time into explaining this or that. The final star I did not give it is precisely because of that. I would have loved some more philosophical stuff. I can't believe that with so much discovered in so little time the characters don't have some kind of breakdown or something, I'm sure I would. :-)

Anyway, a great read, highly recommended.

DNF after 150 pages. I grew tired of the crass humor and slow plot.
