WOW! just wow!
This has to be THE best fantasy book that I have ever read in my life.
This book holds answers to all the questions about the Middle-Earth. The book ends where Lord of the Rings book ends, so yes it bridges the gaps in the stories and talks about the beginning of everything.

I tried to read this over the summer between my 3rd and 4th grade year, I had just finished Hobbit and LotR and was high on Tolkien. I struggled just to get through it. I don't think I retained more than 10% of the book on that first reading. I tried again during my high school freshman year and enjoyed it more but I still didn't enjoy it much as it reminded me too strongly of some of the textbooks I was struggling through at the time.

Consider this -- J.R.R. Tolkien's fantastical epic "Lord of the Rings" is only the tail end of his invented history.

Yes, Tolkien spent most of his adult life crafting the elaborate, rich world of Middle-Earth, and coming up with a fictional history that spanned millennia. And "The Silmarillion" was the culmination of that work -- a Biblesque epic of fantasy history, stretching from the creation of the universe to the final bittersweet departure of the Elves from Middle-Earth.
