From the Beginning to The Gunslinger and the Man in Black
This review could easily bump up to 5 stars once I understand the full story, but to reach that point would require a massive undertaking--seven more novels follow this one. King is, in my mind, not a writer who creates the kind of book one can digest in just a few days. An outstanding beginning to a promising series. I know, I know.. I am coming to the party late.. forgive me. It is a hard book/series to describe.. kind of a mix of western, high fantasy, science fiction, apocalyptic fiction, multi world, other dimension, time travel, and horror. Pretty much everything I enjoy reading about. What intrigues me most is that it ties most of King's body of work together into some sort of connectedness. finally getting around to reading this...
Meh. Most of the book is incomprehensible garbage. Honestly, it wasn't all that well written for much of it. Far too many flash backs, changes in scene with no prompt, contradictory statements, made up words not accompanied by explanations or definitions. It was a mess. The last 50-75 pages the messiness was forgotten or perhaps I got used to the mess. No matter, it finished well enough, problems aside, that I'm interested in reading the next in the serie ...more

The first 90% of this book was just ok...three stars would have been a generous rating, given solely on the basis that the Beatles Hey Jude has somehow traversed into a parallel universe. That's original, don't you think? So it's ok, a little weird, and then BAM!!! Amazing set-up for book 2!!!
