When a friend’s niece and her family are killed, the expert but aging ghul-hunter Adoulla sets off to track down who or what killed them, taking with him his young dervish assistant. When they meet a shape-shifting desert tribe girl whose entire band has been slaughtered, Adoulla knows they are dealing with a greater and more malevolent power than he expected. This quest fantasy gains interest from its setting, which is very similar to the Arab world of some centuries ago. This quest fantasy gains interest from its setting, which is very similar to the Arab world of some centuries ago. Exoticism drenches the built and natural environment, clothes, food, folkways, and spirituality through and through, and it makes the usual magic and superhuman powers seem a little more credible—and the typical stilted language as well, which is not even exactly typical but a step beyond; the repeated formulas and periodic alliterations give the tale a folkloric ring. Adoulla makes an attractively vulgar and compromising lead, set off nicely from his two more ideological and thus tiresome young allies. Fortunately, they are joined by Adoulla’s old friend and his wife, a magus and alchemist of a similar age and wisdom. This diversity in characters is important because, after the first few chapters, Ahmed begins circulating the viewpoint chapter by chapter among the members of Adoulla’s party, and the book is best when the right people are "telling the story." (There’s also a strong, dashing and morally ambiguous but you-know-he’s-a-good-guy prince, who never gets the mike). Ahmed structures his plot and builds character rapport to create an intense, moving final contest that plays out over several chapters. And it comes none too soon, because the middle chapters have a tendency to drag. Really, for an adventure yarn, there isn’t much venture. Our party begins to assemble on Adoulla’s initial ghul-hunting trip, then waits around on Adoulla’s home turf, running only minor errands and staving off one major attack, until it’s time for the final all-in assault. There’s a lot of the two young warriors’ making eyes at each other and Adoulla’s worrying about his city and his old friend’s health. And what’s with those truly ghoulish prologues to each of the book’s main parts? Are they just mechanical attempts to give us a fix on the Villain? All in all, though, I’d rate this a generally successful epic-but-personal fantasy entertainment with plenty of local color, well enough written for the purpose. ...more

Ho sempre amato l’atmosfera orientaleggiante dei classici racconti de Le mille e una notte. Questo amore antico meriterebbe una lunga digressione, che poi diventerebbe un articolo sé stante, quindi rimando ad altra occasione.

L’orientalismo ha suscitato sempre grande fascino sin dal primo ascolto di Scheherazade di Rimsky-Korsakov.
Quando ho scoperto l’esistenza di un “nuovo” filone del fantasy che riecheggia le favolose atmosfere, ho fatto tesoro dei titoli, posto tutto in wishlist e atteso tempi Ho sempre amato l’atmosfera orientaleggiante dei classici racconti de Le mille e una notte. Questo amore antico meriterebbe una lunga digressione, che poi diventerebbe un articolo sé stante, quindi rimando ad altra occasione.

Quando ho scoperto l’esistenza di un “nuovo” filone del fantasy che riecheggia le favolose atmosfere, ho fatto tesoro dei titoli, posto tutto in wishlist e atteso tempi più maturi (alias che il mio balzano umore tornasse nello spirito orientaleggiante).

Complici le offerte di Fanucci sul Kindle Store , sfogliando il catalogo ecco che vengo a sapere che Throne of the Crescent Moon di Saladin Ahmed (un nome che già sembra una garanzia solo per come suona) è stato recentemente e fedelmente tradotto in Italia come Il trono della Luna Crescente. L’occasione si è presentata troppo ghiotta per resistere alla tentazione.

Il romanzo si è rivelato un solido sword & sorcery a tema arabeggiante, ambientato in mondo alternativo con rimandi piuttosto chiari al nostro: l’Abassen è un’immagine fantastica del Medio Oriente medievale, i richiami allo scomparso impero di Kem sono una strizzata d’occhio all’antico Egitto.

Il cast di personaggi è stereotipato nei ruoli, anche se Ahmed riesce a dare personalità a ciascun comprimario senza scadere nel ridicolo. Abbiamo comunque: il vecchio burbero maestro, il giovane assistente zelante e un po’ fanatico, la giovane donna guerriera fiera e testarda, i vecchi amici del mentore, il furfante gentiluomo che intimorisce ma affascina, il tiranno brutto e cattivo e ovviamente il male che vuole conquistare il mondo.

Gli ingredienti sono quindi classici e anche le dinamiche dei personaggi non sprizzano originalità. I punti forti del romanzo sono l’ambientazione ben condotta, ma non pervasiva e lo stile fresco che tiene incollato il lettore alla pagina. E’ una lettura che non stanca e che fa trascorrere piacevolmente un paio di serate.

Sul fattore ambientazione spendo infine una parola in più: troppo spesso mi sono trovato di fronte a sontuose e dettagliate ambientazioni senza una storia appagante che supportasse la grandiosa quinta dello spettacolo. Nel romanzo di Ahmed questo non succede: nessuno infodump fastidioso, descrizioni mai noiose e in generale nulla che sfondi la sospensione di incredulità. I regni della Luna Crescente sono credibili.

Le noti dolenti per chi attendesse il seguito: Ahmed ha sofferto a lungo di problemi depressivi e ha distrutto la prima stesura del secondo romanzo della serie. Prevede di ricostruire il tutto per il 2016. Una lunga attesa, che forse non mi troverà trepidante.
