The world described in this book was amazingly well thought-out and vividly detailed. I really liked that the location was set somewhere that wasn't just your typical Western culture Meg-opolis so common in most sci-fi. The cultural influences and impacts that occur in that region hold great promise, and Bacigalupi handled the intersection well.
The story was brutal and operatic with some very detailed depictions of rape and other violence. ...more

What a fantastic book. Bacigalupi writes a dense text that contains many shocking details and clues to a near-future world that seems seems unfortunately all too possible. Sea levels have risen, fossil fuels have run out, and genetic tinkering of food crops has destroyed the planets ecology. This is the background to an exciting story of Thailand being fought over by powers both within and outside its borders, and the Windup girl - a piece of genetic garbage despised and abused by all - who play ...more
