If nothing else, an excoriation of capitalism and the drive for absolute domination of all else. Ben Reich, whose name is possibly an allusion, the hereditary CEO of a vast company, sees he is beaten in every other way by a rival CEO, Craye D'Courtney, who invests more and better in his company. When his proposal for a merger fails (because why would a superior company agree to split revenue?), Reich decides the only solution is to murder the rival.
