This took me over a year to read. I'm not sure why, because I liked it...but I think it's because I didn't love it, and I felt like I was supposed to love it.
The plot is a fairly standard one about an orphan with extraordinary powers being mentored and groomed to overthrow the Big Baddie. Because this is so archetypal, you don't wonder if it'll happen...you just wonder how.
The how is sort of a slow burn--so slow that I kept putting it aside for months at a time as I got distracted. I'd pick it ...more

This book is a comic book or action adventure movie in prose form. I can't imagine why no one has picked up the film rights since it would seem like it could easily be pitched as Game of Thrones meets Ocean Eleven meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to a Hollywood studio looking for the next big franchise.
