I was first inspired to read this at age nine after watching the original film over and over until long after my parents must have considered accidentally on purpose taping over it. Whoever said either were for children though... utterly terrifying, laden with fear of the unknown and dark elements drawn from myth and legend. It looked so long and the print looked so small... and it helped turn me into a lifelong avid reader. I lost count of the number of times I read it in the end.
