What Members Thought

I've read one or two of Kowal's short stories, and listened to her talk on podcasts, and have always liked her. But I did not expect to love this book so much. It's not really scifi, more 'alternate history space drama', but my god did it pull me right in from the first page, and not let go, through tears and triumphs to the last damn cliff hanger page. Well, wow. So the premise of the book is that in 1952 a meteorite hits the earth, just off the eastern seaboard of the United States. Two scientist from NACA (that world's equivalent of NASA) are on holiday in a cabin in the mountains and have the knowledge to realise the scale of what has happened, and to understand that after the ground shock, with an explosion of that size there will be an even more damaging air blast. Talk about landing running at the start of a book.

I loved the technical aspects of the book but I think the characters were quite flat, and I didn't really buy Elma and Nathaniel's wonderful marriage.
