Arden creates a wonderfully wintery feeling, despite the fact that I was reading this book on 90-100 degree days. I also greatly enjoyed how she built the sensation of a fairy tale, and built on fairy tale tropes that are different from the ones we typically hear.

Vasya is also pretty cool as a fairy tale heroine. Unlike so many protagonists, she hears warnings and prophecies and actually listens. She follows directions. She makes mistakes, b ...more

Loved the characters and the setting, the middle third moved a little too slowly but the last third more than made up for it. Enjoyed the paganism pitted against orthodox religion, chafed at the role of women in those times and the toxic masculinity of some of the men. Good read, glad I didn't give up in the middle. ...more
