So time to get book 2...
More 3.5 stars. An interesting sort of magic in this series. There are some with knacks, which can be pretty powerful, & then there are the powder mages who have a very specific sort of magic dealing with bullets & gunpowder. Above them there are some others who seem to be able to do damn near anything. It didn't make a whole lot of sense, unfortunately. Interesting, but without any sort of rationale to hold it together, it never worked as well as it should have.

After reading (and infatuated with) Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns series, I think the series has set a high bar of fun and quality for military fantasy fiction (not that I read military fantasy before and after this series, so my judgment is obviously biased here). But then another Goodreads fellow member seems really like the Powder Mage series, I think this series deserves a try, although I am already turned off by the cover. Boy, I am glad I tried this one.
