I completely wasn't in the right headspace to appreciate Dan Simmons superb sequel to his amazing Hyperion. It's a dense, complex book likely to throw anyone who has enjoyed Hyperion for a loop as stylistically and narratively it's a completely different beast that eschews the Canterbury Tales structure and engaging narratives for a - on the surface - more conventional man against machine plaus epic spacewar saga. The Fall of Hyperion takes a more traditional approach to storytelling than did Hyperion. As the Hegemony struggles with the Ouster threat and the datasphere, megasphere and the Core AIs, the six Shrike pilgrims must survive the Time Tombs and the deadly Shrike. Overall a pretty awesome book.
