Having just read a book by one of this book's two authors (Abraham) that really disappointed me, I was happy to find that this book is much better written. It has its moments that still don't ring true, but overall the experience was satisfying and I'll check out the sequels.

Update: Having read the book a second time now (after reading the series up to book 5) I loved it even more and give it five stars. Amazing work!

Leviathan Wakes is written by two authors, Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank, who combined with the intent of creating a single super-author possessing the powers of each individual. There are several successful precedents for this formula (e.g., Voltron, Constructicons, Peanut Butter/Jelly, etc.). Why cannot all science-fiction be written like this? Not every sci-fi series needs to have complex rules and space-time mechanics at play. The background is simple, yet believable. While most space operas would tell tales of humanity's expansion into the unknown, faster-than-light travel, and battling aliens, this saga is about that near future where humans have just discovered that there is more to Earth and have started building out civilizations in and around the solar system.
