This is a difficult book for me to write about--it has aspects I loved, and aspects I loathed. I usually love fantasies for their a) world building b) story building c) character building and d) insane revelations. Half a King has tackled options c) and d) very nicely.

This book reminded me a lot of Robin Hobb's work. It has a setup that's a bit of a mash-up between Assassin Apprentice and Ship of Magic. However, Hobb's twists always surprised me, while this book's main plot twist was pretty obvious to me very early on (as was the denouement's). Given that both authors make a point of setting expectations and then refusing to conform to them, I found this a bit disappointing in an Abercrombie book.
