Barsoom is one of the most vividly imagined worlds-- it's no wonder that modern science-fiction & science-fantasy steal so directly from it. A world with much more complex relationships than most people acknowledge, I'm a huge fan (& think the movie was judged unfairly, to boot). --MK

I recently picked up my (inherited from my father) 36-year-old copy of a 100-year old story thinking I could, based upon my enjoyment of the recent film (a film people seem to really like or really hate), blow through it in a few evenings. How wrong I was.

This is one of those books that has been on my to-read pile for 40+ years! The forthcoming movie in 2012 added to my incentive. When I finally started reading 3 days ago, I was immediately entranced. Edgar Rice Burroughs writing style is great, first in the prologue and then as John Carter in the 1st person narrative. I got about 3/4 of the way through and lost interest. The story was okay, but the pacing was spotty, and I just didn't see much to keep me coming back to it. Maybe I'll pick it up again later.
