The writing was good and the story was entertaining, but I don't feel like a better person for having read the book. In the months to come I do not expect myself quoting parts of the book or remembering specific events with fondness or as illustrations of this or that situation. It is entirely a popcorn read, enjoyable but lacking much substance.

Mandel pulls off an impressive feat with this novel: it manages to be elegiac, uplifting, and horrifying all in one package. Probably the most lyrical post-apocalyptic novel you'll encounter, she brings forward the immediacy and enormity of the loss while painting a portrait of the beauty of everyday life.
