So, I'd say I more than liked this book--especially at some points it was really great. 
In summary this is the story of the (real life explorer) Richard Burton who loses his rival/ex-friend to a gun shot at the very start of the novel. Now, the first thirty pages were not my cuppa. The period sexism was ugh and the dialogue seemed flat but then it picked up in pace and in quality of writing, and I was quite enraptured.
