I like dystopias in general, and this is no exception.
Fahrenheit 451 differs from many other dystopias, however, in the sense that its citizens brought the dystopia upon themselves. Humans began neglecting critical thinking in favor of colourful tv shows, preferring fast-paced action over contemplation, which led to a world where intellectualism is shunned and passiveness rewarded. While the government took advantage of the situation, the decline started with the citizens themselves.

In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury reveals a shared concern with Huxley regarding American cultural values. More specifically, Bradbury feared that people were becoming intellectually lazy – preferring broadcast media to books. The main character in Fahrenheit 451 is a fireman but he’s not the type of public servant we are familiar with today. He burns books, which apparently combust at 451 degrees Fahrenheit. I've heard many comparisons of Fahrenheit 451 to 1984. While there are some similarities, I found Bradbury's writing style very odd at times. I love the premise of the book.
