I started this book this morning and just put it down. I was glad it was a holiday and I had nowhere to go! I just couldn't stop going back to it until it was finished. I wasn’t crazy about it at first, but only because it was written from the POV of a 5 year old. I had a difficult time getting into the rhythm of the writing. It didn’t take too long to get used to.

Prior to reading this, a friend of mine told me she stayed up til 4 o'clock in the morning just to finish this-obviously the signs of a goodread! When I opened the book and reviewed the first couple of pages, I was not sure if I would like it due to the syntax, but decided to give it a shot anyways since I was only reading MLS texts! Boy, am I glad I did.

I expected this book to be scarier than it was. The premise is horrifying - a child raised for the first five years of his life in a single 11 x 11 room with only his mother. Never going outside. Never knowing that a world outside "room" exists. However, this book is not horrifying. It is a story of amazing love and resilience. I would recommend this book to an adult or even a high school student.

This book is soooo good! I didn't want it to be finished! To get full enjoyment this book should be listened to-the narration is beautiful!

I absolutely adored this! Although the narration, for me, was a little difficult to get into at first, it soon started to flow more naturally and I was able to get engrossed in the story of Jack and his Ma. It was a truly touching story, uniquely told by Donoghue, whose voice really bought Jack's character to life. Although the topic of the novel was disturbing, it didn't often come across in this way, but rather came across as being sweet through Jack's naivety and charm.

Couldn't put this one down. I read late into the night and snuck as much time during work as I could! I often wonder about the creativity of a person who could write a story like this--like nothing else I've ever read before...I didn't get that part in my brain, but I'm thrilled someone did! And I'm thrilled that I have friends who loan me books! A+

I would give this book 5 stars, but the subject matter and the point of view from which it is told is so disturbing, that I just can't. Donoghue has created haunting characters and the way she allows Jack to tell the story is heartbreaking. This is one of those books that I found myself thinking about all the time that I wasn't reading it. I simply couldn't put it down. I find myself curious about Donoghue's other works.

I thought everything was well done in this book, with the exception of Ma's actions that did not consider her son once they got into the real world. I do not want to be a spoiler. I liked it very much. Topical and thought provoking.

This is one of the most profound, gripping, and cathartic books I have read. I had tears in my eyes throughout the reading, which was a first to me. The little boy, Jack, was so real and his love for Ma so strong that this alone propelled me to the end. If you enjoy books that introduce you to real, dynamic, and interesting people who go on journeys of revelatory power, read this one. Now.

One of those books you don't want to keep reading, but can't put down. And how many toys do we really need?

Amazing. That's all I can say about this book. Jack was so real to me and I was actually sad when the book ended. You must read this book.
