Reading for the first time, how is that possible?

This was a delightful read, why had I never read it before indeed? It's just my kind of wacky family in a ruined old castle kind of book. But speaking of, why wasn't there more fury about the Montmaray books (well, the first one) being basically a slightly altered version of this book?? I saw stuff about how if you liked this you should read those, but wow it was basically almost fan fiction with names changed. Anyway, glad I finally read it.

I found this to be a charming, delightful coming of age story featuring winsome narration and memorable characters. The vivid descriptions of the English countryside and the castle home of the Mortmains were very enjoyable. I appreciated how I went into reading this relatively blind with regard to the overall story and therefore was able to be surprised often at the unpredictability of the plot. How have I never read this book before? It was witty and and inviting, and Cassandra was probably one of the most charming narrators I've read in a while. I wish I'd known about I Capture the Castle when I was in junior high because I would've adored it. ...more
