Love this! I enjoyed the oral-history format, so you see the war from lots of different viewpoints. I pick up new details when I re-read it, too.

You’ve seen the movie, now read the book. And – bonus – you won’t be spoiled for anything, because other than the name and subject matter, they have nothing in common! This book is worth a read, even if you’re not a zombie aficionado. The “dispatches from the front” format breaks it down into bite-sized chunks (heh) and tells the story from a variety of perspectives. And while I’m here, beware the condensed audio version! Great voice work, but you only get about half of the stories.

I had high expectations for this book, and while I liked it and am ultimately glad that I read it, I didn't love it like I was expecting to. Brooks is a fantastic writer, and he took a very unique approach to documenting the zombie war by creating a thorough oral history via many different voices. However, the novel's strongest quality became a hurdle for me while reading it, as I found the flow to be disjointed and keeping track of so many different characters became overwhelming after a while. ...more

If Svetlana Alexeivich had written the history of the zombie apocalypse, it would be - actually, it would be better than this, but this is still a lot of fun.

This book really starts out strong, but gets rather repetitive and bogged down in military tech details by the end. I enjoyed the conceit though - the interview style really lends realism to the work. If you like zombies and postapocalyptic literature, you will probably like this one.

I would give two stars for the writing, but added another for the breadth of the book.
