This book left me speechless in all the right ways.

A year after the novella Flirt ended, Anita is back in St Louis and we pick up with some character building scenes with Nathaniel and Jason in a dance recital. I love these more human interactions between the group. The atmosphere at the dance concert is simply perfect and it was a great way to start the book.

Soon we find out that the vampire politics are about to hit the roof and Anita and Jean Claude must solidify their power base or be over r This book left me speechless in all the right ways.

This book had no negatives for me at all. (we will talk about the bedroom a bit later)

Anita was awesome. Her abilities are still growing and she handled every crisis in this book in her own Anita way.
Jean Claude was his good old vampire self. Being the master we all know and love, and he is growing into a new power level as well - long live the King.
Micah was the supportive boyfriend and Leopard king Anita has always needed.
Nathaniel is the perfect wife, supportive and caring for Anita.
And then we get to Richard, who for the first time since Anita slept with Jean Claude WASNT A MAJOR ASS WIPE. can i get an amen! he finally pulled himself out of his own arse and worked with everyone. My favourite Richard scene in a long time was when he helped subdue Asher. It was Richard embracing Richard.

I have felt a lot of emotions reading the Anita Blake books. Anger, fear, love, frustration, but this is the first Anita book that I actually cried in, and it happened twice! no spoilers but when I actually thought bad things were going to happen and Anita couldn't stop it I cried. Not once but twice because she finally had everyone on the same page or so damn close to the same page that to lose it now would be heart breaking.

This left me so excited for the following books. I can't wait to see where Anita and Jean Claude end up.

Now - I know so many people can't stand the series from here on out because well - all the sex. And yes this entire book pretty much takes place underground in the Circus and yes that means not much police work, mostly politics and power plays between the tiger clans and vampires and so that means we see alot of bedroom action in this particular book. But for all those who hate on it - where else would a Master Vampire whos blood line runs on sexual lust get his power. Jean-Claude literally has to decide if his people will drown in lust or blood. So to save everyone he turns the power that would destroy them all into uncontrolled lust. ...more

One of my favorites from the series. I always find myself crying when one or more of the men prove to show insightful they really are. You can see how far many of them have come since the early days.
