Three Broken Men, three broken pieces, which only worked when they were together.

This book is very different from the first book. The 3 men are together as a unit now but not all is working out as well as it could be.

Mateo and Tristan are both very stubborn and believe that they must live up to this macho image that they have of themselves and protect Josiah at all costs. The irony there of course is that in a lot of ways Josiah is the strongest of the three.

The first half of the book is quite slow and you are sometimes left wondering whether they will ever sort themselves out. This is quite an emotional story as they try to move beyond their perceived failures in the past and live with their nightmares.

Mateo in my opinion struggled the most and his feet always seemed to be itching to run away. He had a hard time believing he had any right to happiness with all the blood on his hands. He found an ally in Tristan and was able to talk quite openly and honestly about his past transgressions but again his desire to protect Josiah prevented the same openness with him.

Tristan is riddled with guilt over what happened to his mother and is reminded of the effects of his earlier life every time he visits her. He still finds any expression of emotion with either of his men difficult as he lives in fear of ever really needing anyone. He has found his ally in Mateo. He perceives Mateo as harder and stronger than Josiah and has been able to finally talk to somebody about his college years and how he earned his money.

All works well until the exclusion of Josiah from one of their past secrets causes tension and threatens everything they have built. The time arrives when total honesty between all three men is the way forward and they each have to trust that it won’t cause further damage.

I don’t think Josiah was given the credit he deserved for his inner strength by his partners in this book. Only at the end did Mateo and Tristan seem to realise his strength and start treating him equally. Poor Ben, it isn’t until the end that you realise just how deeply his feelings ran and how difficult it has been for him watching Tristan fall in love with not one but two men. I am looking forward to his book next.

The time it took me to finish this book was not indicative of my enjoyment with this book - I was traveling and was pulled away from my reading. But these three men's story is very enjoyable. Sometimes the happily ever after needs a bit of drama and mud to squeeze out the full enjoyment of a happy love story. And these men have it in spades. I didn't know how they were going to get out from under all the drama but they do (of course) and I'm glad I was able to join in their journey. ...more
