So far this books is HYSTERICAL!! Shipwrecked teen beauty queens building spears out of pumice stones and gathering drinking water in the stretched fabric of their evening gowns...all while working on their "platforms" and "talents" for the Miss Teen Dream competition. But methinks they are not as "ditzy" as they seem...

Certain parts of this book were pretty funny to me, and then it just became dull. I see where Libba Bray was going with this, but I really think it would have had more impact if each of the girls were not so stereotypical. I will not believe that the majority of teenage girls act like this. At least none that I know do, and they certainly wouldn't take to being preached at like I was while reading this book.

I'm so impressed by Libba Bray's versatile writing skills. Beauty Queens is the second book I've read by her, The Diviners, being the first and each book has it's own voice and style. Sometimes, you get the sense that some authors are "one trick ponies" churning out pretty much the same book with a tweak here and there and that is definitely not the case with this writer. I really enjoyed this book. It was so fun yet also made me think a lot about society's expectations of women. I also happened to read it right around the time of the Women's March in Washington after Trump's inauguration.
Bray makes fun of a lot of things that are part of out current culture (beauty pageants, ad campaigns, reality TV) in a way that you can't help buy enjoy. The book is also pretty different. It starts with a warning about how the story starts with a plane crash but that the read ...more

I listened to Beauty Queens (written and narrated by Libba Bray) while driving and I am sure that the many people who saw me cracking up and wiping away tears while driving thought I was a lunatic! This book has a little of everything: plane crash, those who survive, those who don't, love, a conspiracy, an Elvis-loving dictator, pirates, nervous breakdowns, commercial breaks, endorsements from the pageant sponsor, and all that is competitive pageantry. Lots of plot twists and sarcastic (the funn
