Room was absolutely riveting, however, it's not for everyone. I began describing the premise to my boyfriend and he made me stop, saying he couldn't handle it. I listened to the audiobook, so hearing the story in the voice of 5-year Jack was intense and heart-wrenching. Now I can't wait to see the movie!

Best book of 2010. Jack is a very precocious little boy. He has just turned 5 years old, but his vocabulary is that of a child nearly twice his age. He loves Dora the Explorer, but also the medical dramas of the Discovery Channel. He can read any of his books, but he prefers to have them read to him by his Ma. He loves fruit and hates vegetables. What is so special about Jack? He lives with Ma in an 11 by 11 foot room that has no windows and a locked door, and he has never been outside of it.

This book made me want to take back every five I ever gave as it doesn't compare. The writing style is in the voice of a 5 year old boy, so it is innocent in its style, but you need to stop after reading a few pages and really think about what its saying. When you do... its both fascinating and horrifying. I strongly recommend it!

Michael Cunningham described this book as "revelatory" and he was so right. The tiny details attributed to Jack that show through in his narration are amazing and say so much about his strength and heroism. They say so much about kids in general and the way they might see the world and process it. Ma is a survivor and a hero in her own right. Her struggles, seen through Jack's 5-year-old interpretation, are horrifying to imagine. The eternal hope she holds onto, I don't know how anyone could do

Really good, thought provoking book!
It was so interesting to see the world from Jack's POV. The author did a great job of helping you get into the mind of a 5 year old (although he was a pretty advanced 5-year-old hah).
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was that I felt the ending just fell short. I was so into the rest of the book that the end seemed to just fizzle out. ...more

I wan't sure about this when I started but it got way better. And I like that it makes you think about a lot of things we take for granted in our children and how thy grow up. I loved that it is told through the perspective of a five year old, yet the adult messages come through very clearly.

This is one of the most haunting books I've ever read in my life.
