Liked it. 3.5 rounded up, but this is a tough one to rate. It was a short book so I was able to read it quickly. It took some time to figure out what kind of book this was, it was definitely different. It tackled some tough issues and forced the reader to examine how to look at things from a different perspective. I think it would be even more heart wrenching if the reader was facing the loss of a loved one and grappling with all the issues that causes. Fortunately, I have not experienced any re

This book was amazing. The story, the writing, the illustrations!
I saw the movie after receiving screening passes. It was excellent so I decided to read the book. The movie followed the book pretty well so I ended up enjoying them both equally.
The story is sad but also beautiful in a way. The book revolves around a thirteen-year-old named Conor, whose mother is dying of an illness. Conor has a reoccurring nightmare but one night he is visited by a monster. The monster says he will tell Conor thr ...more

I picked up this book because it was the monthly read in one of my groups. I was really not sure what or how it was going to be. I went I read the author’s story and the premise of the book, it made me more weary. I think it was a good book, but not an amazing book. Maybe after reading all the 5 star rating I expected more. I teared up a little at the end. I think it was a well written story and it had meaning in it and a sad story, but I just didn’t find it amazing.

I think this book hit me harder now than it would have five years ago because of my current living situation (not the same as Conor's but with enough similarities that I wondered what subconscious masochistic streak told me it was a good idea to read this book) but I cried a lot through the end. The art is awesome, the tales the monster tells are my favorite kind of lessons, and Conor's emotions are so raw and realistic. It's not an easy book although it is a quick read (read it in a couple of h

It is hard to review this relatively short book without dropping spoilers all over the place. Let's just say that an ancient monster (in the form of a giant yew tree) comes from the darkness to help a boy through the worst time of his life, but not in the manner expected. Had me thinking of the Stones - sometimes you get what you need...

A Monster Calls is so raw and pure and hits you at the very core of your being. I was incredibly moved by this story and felt absolutely heartbroken for the main character and the struggles he was facing. This book is an absolute must read you will not be disappointed’
