Since Eleanor & Park came out, it seems like everyone in the library world has been indoctrinated into the Cult of Rainbow Rowell. Overall, I really liked this book. I liked the nerdy/neurotic heroine. Cath dealing with her family issues and coming into her own worked for me, and the romance is sweet.
Here's the problem: I absolutely HATED the amount of Simon Snow (think Harry Potter) slash fanfic that was included. I know that writing Simon fanfic is a huge part of who Cath is, and it was impor ...more

I was initially sour on this book. A twin who is obsessed with writing fan fiction derived from a Harry Potter-esque fantasy world? No thanks!
But I kept plowing through this novel, mostly because it was the January feature for the awesome Books and Brews book club ("Teen Reads for Grown-Ups"). This group is magical in itself, as the meetings are always held at a local brewery. But I digress...

Reading this book made all my college memories come flooding back, and it made me pine for those days of uncertainty prior to the last Harry Potter book being released (which was the summer after Junior year for me!)
I related to Cath probably more than any other book character ever. She was me in my college days. There were a lot of individual stories I resembled, but I'll just relate one here - from near the beginning, so as not to spoil anything: Cath is afraid to go to the cafeteria, because ...more

Not knowing any better, I read "Carry On" first, and loved it probably as much as all the fans in this story would have loved it. Anyway, this was good -- I still managed it in two days which is my average with Rowell's work -- but it just made me want to read "Carry On" again.
Also, the boys who populate Rowell's books are like the opposite of manic pixie dream girls -- they are steadfast and honest and own up to their fuck-ups, and completely unreal. ...more

Rainbow Rowell is awesome! Her writing is so easy to read (or listen to in my case) and you can't help but get lost in the story. Fan Girl was pretty good, but the Simon readings got a little tedious for me to get through. Eleanor and Park is still my favorite book by her!
