Guy Gavriel Kay has been on my “must try” list for years. I have heard him recommended so many times and I have come across devoted fans that will praise his prose endlessly. And on top of that, he writes stand-alone novels, so there is no fear of commitment here. With all of that, I have no idea why I have not read one of his novels previously. As with Kay's other books, The Lions of al-Rassan is staggeringly beautiful in it's prose and character development, it's story flow, it's eloquence and grace. Kay continues to prove to me that he's possibly my favorite prose master in all of fantasy; each of his books I read is more beautifully written than the last.

This is my first Guy Gavriel Kay novel and it certainly made me see why he's such a celebrated author. Other reviewers have gone over the plot so I'll just list a few pluses and minuses. One, why is this a fantasy novel? Simply because it's based in a land that doesn't exist. I was disappointed in the beginning and kept waiting for the magic system to be introduced. This reads much more as historical-fiction or alternate-history than as fantasy, which is fine but I wish I had known that going in

A delightful and surprising read. This was the first of Kay's alternate history fantasy stories that I read, in fact there is no magic in this whatsoever, yet its distinction from actual events places it firmly on the Fantasy shelves.
