Probably the first science fiction novel, this is a terrific read, a book which is mis-perceived due to the popularity of film adaptations which have completely missed the story. Frankenstein's unnamed creation, generally referred to in the book as "the wretch", is highly sensitive, articulate and athletic -- as well as being gigantic, ugly and murderous. Even on my third read, Shelley's masterwork remains as timeless *and timely* as ever (I thought a lot about AI during this read). I am always surprised when I remember how dissimilar the novel is to the cultural understanding of the Frankenstein story. ...more
