I've always wanted to read this book, and finally I read it. Literally, the Count of Monte Cristo exceeded my expectations and I was so attached to the story from many angles. Dumas was able to capture the true essence of betrayal, patience, love, friendship, family, adventure, revenge and many more aspects. This one has it all: murder, mystery, revenge, redemption social satire, beautiful descriptive passages, exotic settings, history, and a huge cast of characters in an incredibly convoluted plot. Sure, there are bandits, smugglers and daring escapes, but it would be unjust to dismiss this sprawling page-turner as a mere adventure story.
