Finally Finished!!! Whew. This is a really good book, but Hugo does go off into tangents. What was he thinking when he wrote about the street slang for example? He goes off on these tangents and I have only found one or two of them to contribute anything to the main stories of Jean Valjean, Cosette and Marius.

Summary: A massive book by a French patriot about people, humanity society and philosophy.
He uses an epic story of one mans redemption to illustrate and navigate a lot of these ideas.
Things I liked:
Characters:
I loved the characters like Val Jean and Gav Roche. Fantine and Javert and many other besides.
While they may have been a little unrealistic at times (extreme people in extreme circumstances certainly not like anyone I really know or have met); they ooze poetry (extreme ideas counter po ...more

I read this in french, and I _LOVED_ it. I can't even write a review except to say: anyone who hasn't read this is in for a treat (a heartwrenching, wonderfully loving, unexpectedly touching) treat.
