I remember that when I originally read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn 16 years ago, it didn't make much of an impression on me. Though I didn't remember the particulars of the story before I re-read it, I'm pretty sure I considered a lot of it boring since not much happens in it. But this time, I fell in love with it. Oh my goodness, how come I didn't read this book sooner? I absolutely loved this charming yet gut wrenching novel that takes the reader through the lives of the Nolan family from 1912 - 1917. You get to experience the ups and downs of their Brooklyn life. This fabulous novel has you relating to Francie, the young girl, one moment than identifying with her hard working loving mother the next. This is a must read for any girl/woman of any age! ...more

I absolutely loved this book! The author effortlessly conveys what it was like to be poor and live in the early twentieth-century in New York. Even through the story is told the eyes of a child, much of the subject matter is disturbing (child molesters, alcoholism, adultery). I highly recommend this as a MUST READ!
