I almost want to give this one four stars but for so much of the book I couldn't think of a single thing I liked about it, so I'm going to stick with three. I do NOT understand the appeal of Heathcliff, as his behavior so far outstrips his grievances that it's inexcusable, imo. ANd to call this a romance seems so very wrong to me. Anyway, I've read it again, and have a better appreciation for it than before, but it will never be a favorite for me. ...more

At first I didn't care much for this book at all. I found Catherine very whinny throughout the whole book, and Heathcliff very cruel. If Catherine wasn't eaten up with pride and arrogance and would not have married for status then she might have been happy. Heathcliff hurt by her refusal for ever accepting him because of status (even though she really loved him) cause him to completely cruel in his revenge on her. You know, I liked this book. It was rather torturous and I think I would have enjoyed it much more as an angst-filled teen, but I still appreciated the depiction of horrid, malevolent characters. What I found distracting more than anything was the book's reputation as a romance. A romance? Really? ...more
