This is one of my favorite childhood books ever!!! When I was little, we lived in this area of Fort Worth where our backyards opened up to this park, and it wasn't really a garden but I always thought of myself as Mary Lennox walking around (haha I definitely had her attitude!). Not only is this one of the most wonderful childrens books ever, it's a truly timeless classic: the best stories are the ones that are applicable to every generation.

I fell in love with the 1993 Coppola produced film in my childhood and finally reading the book has clarified the creative changes made that better defined the relationships than what is only implied in the original story. Colin kind of steals the character arc from Mary in the book but that aspect didn't take away from the core story of redemption, nurturing friendships and positive thinking. I found this book to be very endearing amongst other things and had trouble putting it down. I read it in two sessions.
I loved the descriptions of the garden and it made me feel that I would like to go out and plant my garden with lots of beautiful flowers.
I am so glad I read this book and it was beautifully written.
