The first (and last) line of this novel may be the best opening to any book I’ve ever read — “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”
I did a buddy-listen with my brother-in-law with this book (he finished weeks before me 🤦🏻♀️) and I am SO glad to cross this one off my classics list. Wow. Was there ever a better student of the human condition than Tolstoy? His dilemmas and characters are vividly life-like -- you are confronted with your own weaknesses and sins, and exult with the characters in their celebrations or victories.
I'm giving this book 3 stars. It was brilliant in its way but terribly depressing. I would sum up the story by saying - Nobody's ever really happy, ever.
