Very glad I finally got around to this. Fully deserving of its reputation, with a great breadth and depth, at once tragic and hopeful. Tolstoy covers an immense amount of territory in what is essentially a psychological novel of character, including religion, spirituality, nineteenth century Russian and European history, and the seeds of Soviet communism in both agrarian reforms and a dissolute aristocracy.
