I listened to this as an audiobook with Richard Gere and Haley Joel Osment, and it was a very good listen. This book is like a dream. You can't expect it to make sense literally. It seems as though it is primarily metaphor and symbolism. I can imagine that a person stuck in the desert might imagine something like this, as his brain is fevered by the heat and lack of water. Surprisingly there are few children's books on the 1001 Book to Read Before You Die list, but this is one of the few. The tone is very meloncholy, but uplifting in the sense of creativity. For the era which this was written it was brilliant, and the translator's worked very hard to convey the feeling that captured so many hearts of France.

This is going to be a short review because it's the 24 in 48 readathon and I really should be reading.
I just finished The Little Prince and the fact that it's not even 9AM and I'm bawling my eyes out should be recommendation enough. This book was so imaginative and bittersweet. The Little Prince is one of those books that I think I'm going to reread numerous times and keep getting more and more out of it after every reread. Such a short, sweet read that packs so much emotion into it. Again, high ...more

This the third time I have read this book (one time in French!). I don't know if it was the new translation or being an adult, but I can't dry my tears fast enough. Unbeknownst to me, I had re-written the ending. Still charming, thought-provoking, but just hits differently. Reading aloud to my 8 year-old was not my best idea.
