The challenge was to read a book that I had started but never finished. I started reading this masterpiece first when I was in my 20’s and frankly, I didn't get it. I was certainly not as literary then as now, but I don’t think that was really the problem. It may have been part of the problem, but I think the real problem was that I didn't think the book made sense. Rather, it was written about a world that doesn't make sense. Outstanding. This is one of the best books I've ever read. Dark throughout, with a pretty macabre sense of humor. But it was funny and entertaining, and the characters were just terrific. The more experience I get with bureaucracies, the more spot-on these characters become. If Heller hadn't included so much sex with prostitutes this could have been a much more popular book. As it is, that feature is an understandable turn-off for many people, and a big reason I'm hesitant to recommend it to any ...more
