The Windup Girl is set in Thailand during what is referred to in the book as the Contraction. The Contraction is a prolonged period of economic disaster, caused by the ecological disasters of the preceding Expansion. I liked this book a bit less than everyone else. The writing is good and the setting is fresh and engaging, but Emiko (the titular Windup Girl) bugged me. The book is all about her exploitation and objectification, and yet the text also seems to participate and even glory in that exploitation. It feels like the book takes a pervy pleasure in the graphic, repeated scenes of her sexual abuse. Set in Bangkok, the last independent state, after plagues ravage the world's population and food supply, this is a distopian vision of the future dominated by genetics corporations and steeped in racial paranoia. Visionary and well-researched, often brutal with few sympathetic characters. An interesting read but I thought the ending was abrupt.
